Idol Talk with Abhijeet Sawant

He’s the original Indian Idol, singer Abhijeet Sawant comes to you on live chat, only on Indiatimes on Wednesday January 7, between 1 PM to 1:45 PM.

Abhijeet, as everyone who followed that eponymous first season of Indian Idol knows, was the middle-class boy wonder who won the title at the all-India singing competition launched by Sony Entertainment Television channel. Naturally, the now 27-year-old became a rage amongst youngsters all over after winning the Indian Idol title in 2005, more so since this was the first reality TV competition to capture the people’s imagination. His final song for the competition, ‘Mohabbatein Lutaunga’ is still the song people remember him by.

Abhijeet later went to produce and sing a couple of fairly well-received albums. And his star has always shone bright on TV. He was the first runner up of Clinic All Clear Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar, and came back with third place in the Asian Idol competition. The singer is currently making his acting debut with the movie ‘Lottery’. Recently he was also seen as a participant in another reality TV programme, this time in a new avatar as dancer in Nach Baliye 4. On the personal front, Abhijeet quietly tied the knot with long-time friend Shilpa Edvankar in December 207. In fact, the couple was together as a team on Nach Baliye 4.

Much acclaim followed for his work in movies like 'Split Wide Open' (Best Actor, Singapore Film Festival, 2000), Mr. And Mrs. Iyer, and 'Jhankaar Beats'. Later, 'Thakshak' and 'Chameli' followed, a more mainstream trend by his own standards.

The actor, who made his directorial debut with "Everybody Says I'm Fine', is also an active social activist. Besides being ambassador of the American India Foundation, a New York-based NGO committed to funding social projects in India, he also started his own foundation as part of the sustained relief work for
